I think spending money on something that they don't know anything or
very little about just to find out if Linux can be a useful product for
them maybe an issue for some new users.
That same user might,
1. still have dial-up internet access with no way to try Linux
2. not be as lucky as your friend and know someone who can give them a
copy to try.
I think the lower cost just gives someone "on the edge" a little more
incentive to try and escape the "dark side". ;-) A twenty dollar
reduction in price for some users, especially given the current economic
conditions, may just be the incentive needed for them to take Linux for
a test drive.
