capslock is on? You did choose MD5 passwords and shadow passwords during the upgrade? You did not select NIS, Ldap etc as the authentication method? If you can log into a plain console as root, check your authentication method with authconfig and check the /etc/passwd, /etc/group, /etc/shadow, /etc/gshadow files
