Thanks for showing me that.  Interesting .. top didn't show me anything
useful, but:

$ watch --interval=1 free

was interesting, and when it ran out of memory was neat to watch with
free

This will help cleanup after the test, for anyone else:
(Watch free to see swap get cleaned up to 0 after turning it off)
# swapoff -a
# swapon -a
