you could try to run Postfix under strace to see which SASL configuration
file is read and whether sasldb gets opened. i posted a message (smtp auth
help) a minute a ago about configuring Postfix to use the saslauthd
password checking method which you could look up. you can find some
Postfix+SASL related resources also from the Postfix www-pages.
