I religiously use the tarballs. Since the kernel module needs to be
compiled for a specific kernel, you will require the tarballs if you
have a non stock RH8 (or whatever distro they have rpms/tgz's built for
them).

Stick with the source anyway.  I have been finding some really nifty
tricks with small modifications to the code as well.
