Kernel 2.4.18-14 (stock RH 8.0)
Relevant dmesg output:
ide0: BM-DMA at 0xdc00-0xdc07, BIOS settings: hda:pio, hdb:pio
(Silicon Image chipset IDE ATA-133 controller, both devices of
interest are on the secondary bus)
hda: WDC WD1200JB-00CRA1, ATA DISK drive
hdb: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-105, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
(Cendyne 4X DVD-RW drive)
hda: 234441648 sectors (120034 MB) w/8192KiB Cache, CHS=232581/16/63, UDMA(100)
After I start a recording:

(last 2 lines repeated a few times)
hdb: DMA disabled
then
hdb: ATAPI reset complete

ide-scsi: hdb: unsupported command in request queue (0)

hdparm output (after DMA is turned off on hdb):
/dev/hda:

using_dma = 1 (on)

readahead = 8 (on)
geometry = 14593/255/63, sectors = 234441648, start = 0
/dev/hdb:

using_dma = 0 (off)

Observations:
- the IDE controller takes much longer now than it did before to scan
the primary bus
- the machine freezes when the IDE bus is reset, which is to be
expected since hda is my root (and only) filesystem
- the DVD recording seems to work OK thanks perhaps to burn-proof
hardware, I really don't know. I assume that any real problem with
the recording would produce a coaster.
- I'm using an 80-pin cable, rated for ATA-133, and a little stretched
in order to reach the DVD recorder; I will get a longer cable if
that could help.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm wondering if the problem is
harmful to either drive and if there's something I can do.
Thanks
Ted
