Hi Chris & Gordon, Yes the apple AMS is whack! Although there are some work arounds after you get it set up. I've been letting Apple tech support know through my "apple care" coverage about this problem for the past 2 years at least.
They said it can be fixed, but I guess not enough of us take the time to let them know! ;) I use external midi gear all the time so its usable once its set up! :) PT comes with MIDNAM files for my Kurzweil K2500X and my Roland Fantom-x6 and tons more so once you get past the AMS set up your cool! ;) Give me a call for more details.
