Hi Jason,
What I do is to mark a hot spot on the tempo numeric field when  changing tempo.
If this is funky that day turn off VoiceOver and back on again and reset hot 
spots, Remember just tap the "T" key while your playing the song to set new 
tempo then hit enter to lock it in!
