Hi Cara,
For track selection and deselection at least in pt 9.3 on an HD 3 system, with 
Snow Leopard while in the mix window, the tracks table "must be" resized to the 
right about 30% for the tracks to behave normally.
Thats why I operate from a template most of the time.
After  getting sighted assistance the first time, to resize the tracks table 
for the template track selection is consistent from session to session Un till 
you get over 45 to 50 tracks then it gets a bit weird!

If you look in the archives you will see the tracks table resizing thing come 
up periodically.
As for the "showing tracks that are selected" this becomes a habit just like 
practicing scales! ;)
