you may want some modulation or EQ on the delay repeats as well.

What you're hearing there is slap delay with
regeneration. It was originally done by sending
a signal to a tape machine in record mode while
monitoring from the playback head and then
returning it to the console. Taking the returned
signal and feeding it back to the tape recorder
at a low level would create the feedback loop for the regenerating echoes.
Use a delay plug-in and set the delay time to
around 100 milliseconds and experiment with the
feedback amount to taste. That's all you need to do.
