Comparing the sounds in a psr keyboard to a motif xf is like comparing a honda civic to a mercedes. As far as lower end keyboards go, the casio stuff is better than Yamaha these days. Gord

My wife and I did a lot of gigs we were one of the highest paid two piece acts on the East Coast. You could also use a weighted midi controller and a module. Back in 2005, my wife and I started playing together (officially). We needed a keyboard, but needed one fast, and with as little money as possible. At the time, neither one of us had a job. So, paying around $2000+ just for a portable keyboard was impossible. We settled on a PSR 450 which we still have and use on occasion. After some time, we realized that the PSR sounds were a far cry from professional sounds. However, we still had to use the PSR at live events because we had no other access to a professional grade portable keyboard. When we wanted to record our songs, we held on to the hope that a DAW with instruments controlled by the midi specification would save us from a disasterous problem. We didn’t sound very good live, we couldn’t record anything useful, and we gave up after a point. After all those years, both of us have poor playing techniques because we had to follow after the PSR sounds and styles. When looking for a keyboard replacement, one of the critical factors involved sound quality of the keyboard instruments. Since we have used the PSR for that many years, my ability to discern high quality sounds had vanished. Now, all of the sounds from any Yamaha make or model sounds exactly the same as the PSR. At least the basic fundimentals sound the same. It’s not good when you can’t tell the difference in sound between a PSR and Tyros 2. Unless my ears are still good, and there is no difference. We were also disappointed when listening to the Yamaha provided demos of different keyboard models. The audio demo on the website sounded impossibly good. However, when I went to the store to check one out, the sounds were flat and cheezy. In either case, we are getting back into the playing music area again. After poor experiences with recording and playing, we need a new perspective on things… we also need new hardware! I have always heard that Yamaha was good. Unfortunately, my prospective on the brand might be a little off. Whatever keyboard we end up with, it should be portable, very high quality, and whatever the price is, we will wait for it to come. Price doesn’t matter, it should be portable, have the ability to play soft synths, speakers are not required, and preferably not in the Yamaha line. It should have the ability to connect to the line-in device in the studio through traditional analog out, firewire, thunderbolt, or USB. It also needs to focus on instrument quality when not connected to the studio rack instead of arranging styles (similar to a Yamaha workstation).
