OK, and then command+F I guess is the over all fade dialog.  Right?

Just check the options in the edit menu under fades. ;-)

D is fade from start of a region or clip to the cursor position
G is fade to end of a region or clip from the cursor position
F ist crossfade the boundary of regions or clips.

What are the differences in d, f, and g?

One is fade to end, isn't it?  I don't recall how those 3 keys work.
