This is probably gonna be blasphemy to say, but GarageBand is free and Drummer is quite underrated especially as a songwriting tool. Get in Touch off list if you want to set up a time to have a crash course. Otherwise there is one of the ProTools drum instrument that I remember Slau mentioned that would be useful for that capacity as well.
