Hi Slau, and thanks for the info!

I guess Pro Tools 2019.5 is not compatible with El Capitan? ;) And since the
Flo Tools version working with El Capitan will not work with Pro Tools 2019.5
anyways, I guess I’ll finally have to switch to a machine that can run the most
recent OSX, Pro Tools and Flo Tools. :)

Hey folks,

Here's a link to an mp3
<https://www.dropbox.com/s/25rakwvxfx3ikap/What's%20New%20for%20VoiceOver%20Users%20in%20Pro%20Tools%202019.3.m4a?dl=1>
detailing what's new in Pro Tools 2019.5. Keep in mind that there was every
indication that this was going to be released in March so there might be
references to 2019.3 in the mp3. If you'd rather just read about it, I've
pasted some notes below.

OK, so Pro Tools 2019 is finally out and there are a few important things to
mention. Under the hood, there have been major changes but, for the most part,
things will work more or less the same. Here are a few things to note:

• The big news is that, because of some rewritten code, the focus issue we've
seen since El Capitan has been fixed. Everything seemed to point to this being
purely a voiceOver issue but, it turned out that, as a result of later
operating systems, certain code needed to be in place for VoiceOver to function
correctly. Bottom line is, VoiceOver is no longer thrown back to the top left
of the Mix or edit windows after closing the Plug-in or other windows. Focus
goes back to where it was previously. Important caveat: this is true in Mojave
but not necessarily in Sierra and High sierra. In other words, with 2019, you
might possibly still have some focus issues under Sierra or High sierra but not
with Mojave. Users will probably find this the main reason to update to Mojave.

• Control+semicolon and Control+p now speak track selection natively in Pro
Tools. Flo Tools users have had this functionality since day one but now Pro
Tools itself is offering this feedback. Unfortunately, to avoid VoiceOver
outputting both the menu item text for moving the edit insertion up and down as
well as the track name, the shortcuts had to be removed from the menu. This is
a bit unfortunate for those who'd like to have such important navigation
commands within the menus. Long-time users will, of course, know these
shortcuts but casual users who dabble in several DAWs will likely miss having
these shortcuts displayed within the menus as reminders.

• Some users are used to the old-school shortcuts for entering values in the
Main Counter as well as the Start, End and Length fields. Using the num pad
still works correctly for this purpose. It used to be that one could also click
on any of the counters and simply enter values and press Return to enter the
new numbers. As of 2019, one needs to either press delete (backspace), Clear or
the decimal key before entering the new value. This happens to not be the case
for bars and beats but certainly for minutes and seconds. It's a bit of a
strange quirk but, the important thing is, using the asterisk and slash keys
behave just as they always have. It's only if you don't have the num pad and
you don't use Flo Tools that you'd have to enter those values by typing them.

• Grid/Nudge Cluster has now been rewritten to reflect the correct roles for
the controls and now the Nudge Value edit field is visible. No more having to
use the Item Chooser to get to the edit field. Keep in mind that, as mentioned
above, if you're in minutes and seconds, you'll need to delete first before
typing a value after clicking this edit field. Flo Tools users will always be
alerted to press Delete first but only when the counter is set to minutes and
seconds.

• Speaking of Flo Tools, we've had to make a tremendous amount of changes to
keep up with the recoded interface right up until the release. Good news is
that Avid has worked very closely with the Flo Tools team as well as other
developers using the accessibility API and UI automation. As a result, Flo
Tools 2019.5 (which will be available later today) is compatible with Pro Tools
2019.4 on Mojave as well as Sierra and High Sierra.

• Pro Tools 2019 now gives VoiceOver users access to right-click menus for
several UI elements including the I/O pop-up buttons, all inserts and sends and
the Group ID Indicator in the track channel strip. The right-click feature has
been there in Pro Tools for a few years but it wasn't directly accessible via
VoiceOver. Track pad users had to bring up the menu, turn on QuickNav while
still holding down two fingers on the track pad and use the down arrow to
navigate. Fortunately, these controls now respond to VO+Shift+m. This means we
now have easy access to the options listed below.

Within the track Input and Output assignments:

a. Make Active/Inactive. You can now easily make input and output paths active
or inactive right from the IO menus in the Mix and edit windows.
b. Rename. You can rename input and output paths right from the Mix and edit
windows. No need to go to the I/O Setup window.
c. Bounce Out… You can now choose to make a bounce of the selected path along
with any other tracks routed to the same path.
d. Select Assignments to… You can now select tracks that are also assigned to
the same input or output path as the current track assignment.
e. Show Assignments To… You can now show tracks whose input or output paths are
set to the same paths as the current track even if they are hidden.
f. Show Only Assignments To… You can now choose to show only tracks whose input
or output paths match those of the current track.

In the Sends area, there are two newly available right-click menus. For now,
the Send Selector menu (the one on the left side) has a right-click menu that
doesn't currently affect VoiceOver users. It has to do with the Sends display.
In the Send Assignment column (on the right side) there are options for the
following:

g. Mute. Mute a send right from the menu instead of the Send window.
h. Pre Fader. Switch a send between pre and post fader right from the menu
instead of the Send window.
i. Make Inactive. Make a path inactive from the menu instead of the I/O Setup
dialog.
j. Rename. Rename busses right from the Mix or Edit window instead of the I/O
Setup dialog.
k. Bounce Bus… Bounce discrete busses from the Mix or Edit windows.
l. Select Assignments To… Select tracks whose send paths are set to the same as
the current send path.
m. Show Assignments To… Show tracks whose send paths are also set to the same
path as the current send even if they are hidden.
n. Show Only Assignments To… Show only the tracks whose send assignments are
set to the same send path as the current send.

Wait, there's more…
In the Inserts section you can right-click on the Insert Assignment column (on
the right side) to bring up the following options:

o. Bypass. You can bypass an insert from the menu instead of the Plug-in window
or by having to Command-click.
p. Make Active/Inactive. You can now use the menu to activate or deactivate an
insert rather than having to Control+Command-clicking on it.
q. Commit Up to This Insert. Now you can commit a track up to the selected
insert.
r. Freeze Up to This Insert. You can now freeze a track up to the selected
insert.
s. Automation Safe. Make a plug-in automation safe from the menu without having
to open the Plug-in window.
t. Automation Dialog… Go directly to the automation dialog for the selected
insert without having to open the Plug-in window.
u. User Presets. Select presets from the menu rather than having to necessarily
open the Plug-in window.

v. While focused on the Group ID Indicator, right-click to bring up an
alternate menu.

• The track list now displays track numbers if you have the Track Numbers
option checked in the View menu.

• The Grid/Nudge Cluster has been rewritten so that pop-up menus and edit
fields are properly identified.

• The Item Chooser once again sees items within the Memory Locations window.

• The VoiceOver Jump command has been a quick way to jump between the Tracks
List and Clips List tables. In Pro Tools 2019, the Groups List table has been
added to that group. So now, pressing VO+j will cycle through each of the
tables while jumping to and automatically interacting with them.

• Groups List now has a column that indicates whether all or some of the tracks
within the group are selected. More important, the Groups List table behaves as
you'd expect with no strange behavior where clicking on one group seems to
toggle other groups on and off inexplicably. Yay!

• Edit window now contains Volume fader and pan knobs if IO is selected from
the Edit window Shows submenu of the Views menu. Note that the volume fader
currently only moves in tenth of a dB increments. We'll get that fixed next
time around.

• There's a little fix to the Output view selector in the Pan/Send window and
Output window. One used to have to pop it open to see what was selected. Now it
reports the currently selected path.

• Hot Spot users (if there are any left) will find that the feature once again
works in the Track List table.

There might be one or two other little things that got fixed unexpectedly while
redoing the interface. Of course, that means one or two things might have
gotten broken. If you notice anything that no longer works in 2019 that used to
work in earlier versions, please post a message here and the message will get
through to Avid. In fact, stay tuned for some news on the feedback front. More
later. Enjoy Pro Tools 2019.5!
