I just changed my Office update channel to "Beta" and got version 16.60.
Now reading and writing is possible again.

According to a post on AppleVis, it is a bug and is fixed in the latest beta 
version of word.
Might be that nothing can be done until the update is released aside from 
insuring that the copies of word still working are not automatically updated.
