I've uncommented the $PTOLEMY/bin/pxgraph's row "PT_USE_X11_PXGRAPH=yes",
and updates my .bash_profile with 'set PT_USE_X11_PXGRAPH yes'.
With _both_ changes 'ptolemy' works fine.
