Hi Friends,
I'm in Nevada this week attending the AccessNets'08 conference
where Russell and I have a paper on our unwirepdx-watch.org work. I just
saw a great talk about a municipal/community network in Finland that was
really inspirational. At least from the perspective of PTP's mission -
these guys are dead on. I love that their network design is all about
KISS (Keep it Simple, Stupid) and "Don't Fix it 'til it's broke" -
design parameters which have resulted in a functional network for 5
years now. The network involves APs deployed and maintained by at least
half a dozen different organizations, which have all agreed on an SSID
and all aggregate at one L2 switch (hosted in the Oulu version of the
Pittock).
If you have a moment, check out their paper (which doesn't provide much
novel in terms of accademic contribution, but is still interesting):

Or their website:

And remind yourself that this whole city-wide
free-as-in-freedom-and-beer network thing can work somtimes provided the
requisite entities agree to cooperate and invest a little for the public
good.
