Andy, I think what you want to do can be done by turning on the unit with disk and card in slots. Then use the up arrow key to find the media option and hit a right or left arrow until you hear disk or card. From this point on I imagine you can simply press record to then begin recording either on the card or disk depending on your choice. You can also try to pick the CD and press number 5 to go into the menus. You can then arrow to "Backup" and press enter to back up from CD to flash or flash to card.
