Hi, Penny!
I asked Larry about the settings that might cause the PTR1 to make its own section breaks, aka tracks. We think the machine will make its own break if the silence is longer than your setting. If you press the Heading key to cause a new track and the silence is long enough for the machine also to do this, you will get 2 tracks. That is to say that you made one and so did the machine. When you use the pause button instead, the track breaks are only the ones that are sufficient for the machine to put its own into the recording. If one of the silences between songs is too short for your setting to cause an automatic track or section break, you will get 2 songs in that track.
The answer in this case would be to set the PTR1 so that it either considers shorter silences to be breaks between songs or so that it makes no breaks at all. The latter would mean that you would need to make them all yourself with the Heading key. The former choice might cause a track break if there is too long a pause in the song, which does happen, and too much static or scratch noise from a record, for example, might cause the silence not to be detected. In other words, the PTR1 might think it wasn't really a silence between songs. I think the best choice is to set the machine so that you can control it all yourself.
Here are the steps to use to find and make this setting. By the way, I assume you know when to press Enter to select an item.
Hit the 5 key for Menu.
Hit the 6 key twice for Recording Settings.
Select your Input Device.
Select Recording Type, Custom Setting.
Select Sample or Bit Rate.
Select Timing of Start Recording. Suggested, When Record button is pressed.
Select Increment Section Setting. This is the important one!
Select, When No Sound.
Select Split Phrase Setting. This one is like the previous except that it makes phrase breaks and not sections, which do not cause new tracks to be made.
Select Noise Level.
Select Time to Stop Recording.
It says, "set," and you're done.
