The point was made to me that this technique has been used in a microformat, but the examples given at http://microformats.org/wiki/rel-bookmark#Rel_design_pattern are using the a element not the link element.
I'm not concerned with the precise choice of rel keyword we use, and it could be better to choose something entirely new other than "bookmark", as the HTML4.01 description of the intended semantics is as clear as mud to me at least (as I have no idea what an "extended document" means). If you think that these proposals have merit as an important accessibility aid and an opportunity for _UI consistency_ through standardisation, then please suggest alternative choices of keyword. I certainly didn't invent this technique. For example see http://www.boxofchocolates.ca/archives/2003/12/08/changing-the-scope-of-link-relationships for one. I was just impressed by the clean design and have been exploited it in my earlier work as an accessibility aid and an aid to i18n-friendliness in a multilingual site. I suggest that the link element is the right thing here, because this is _information about the document_, not content within it. ("Declaration: these are the following significant points in the document that a user may wish to jump to".) So it's very much like meta-data. The more new well-defined rel keywords that go into HTML5 the better, in fact. Thoughts? Cecil Ward.
