We use (or at least plan to map our ontology to) FOAF, primarily because of its linkage to Wordnet, support for identity reasoning (via Inverse Function Properties), significant adoption, and coverage of a good chunk of vocabulary terms that can be used for patient demographic data.
We do also use vCard for the other demographic terminology that FOAF doesn't support so well (mailing address and types - home,work,etc.. - , for instance).
