Species disambiguation in text mining is harder than one might think.  A 
project that looks useful in this regard is Uniprot's younger sibling PRO 
(http://pir.georgetown.edu/pro/), which is being compiled at the Protein 
Information Resource at Georgetown and provides a species-independent backoff 
for when you don't know where your smad or rigor mortis came from.
