i) It is already folklore, that you can do that with using the !bound() filter outside an optional, i.e.

SELECT ?X
FROM G
WHERE { ?X a foaf:Person
       OPTIONAL { ?X foaf:mbox ?M}
       FILTER (! bound(?X) ) }

Shouldn't that be !bound(?M) ?
