This seems like a kernel bug, since dmesg shows a kernel stack trace and
pulseaudio becomes unkillable. Those two things should never happen on a good
kernel. I understand that you'd like to blame pulseaudio on the basis that you
can use the card without pulseaudio, but pulseaudio can't be blamed for kernel
bugs.
