With BlueZ 4 we support hardware volume, i.e. the 15 volume levels. This is actually quite important, because if you rely on software volume, there will be two independent volume controls for the headset: the software volume in PulseAudio, and the headset's internal volume. Not user-friendly at all. This is not to say that you must implement this feature.
