It's possible but the report is not clear at all, I'm not sure. I don't
use Gnome so I don't have gnome-volume-control, can't say its icon is
stuck or not. Maybe gnome-volume-control is synchronously interacting
with PA and is aware that the sink is not unmuted and keeps the icon
muted, don't know. But yes rebooting, logging out is sufficient to
trigger the problem because PA quits on those actions and is restarted
after reboot or logout.

I don't know maybe PA can't read/write the volumes correctly to its db?
It seems that there are different db backends (gdbm, tdb). Maybe one is
working okay and the other one fails?

Colin told me on IRC that he also can reproduce the problem.

BTW the rest of my e-mail should be as clear as possible, I tried hard
to clear things there, I can always provide more debug stuff whenever
you want.

Thanks,
