Hi Varun,
There's nothing special about Punjabi in Drupal. Rather everything is
according Drupal's default concepts. We are using the default Content
translation, Locale module, along with i18n module from the contributions.
There are more localization modules installed but those are for maintaining
translations. http://drupal.org/getting-started and
http://drupal.org/handbooks offer good instructions to get you going for
setting up Drupal websites (if you aren't already familiar).
With the i18n, Locale and Content translation module(included in core), we
get the power of maintaining multiple translations of content. There can be
three possible website setups for you to consider:
1. Maintain English & Punjabi Interface with content in "both" languages.
Remember, content and interface are two different things.
2. Maintain English & Punjabi interface with content in any one of the
languages. (and there are several combinations of #1 and #2, but i'm talking
about the major ones).
3. Maintain a normal website with single language all over which is
Punjabi (only). This kind of setup is similar to English installation with
the English replaced with Punjabi interface translation. Then your content
doesn't need any kind of language specifier, you may just use the content
nodes as normal Punjabi node, and this is the easiest setup to maintain.
Highly recommended for the kind of requirements you are mentioning.
All that you need to do (other than theming) is:
- Install Drupal and configure the default behavior by browsing through
the settings, etc.
- Enable the Content Translation and Locale modules.
- Goto admin/settings/language and add a new language. Select Punjabi
there. (yes that's plain empty, same as english, we yet need to publish our
punjabi translation progress on drupal.org).
- Change the default language to Punjabi and disable English. (This
Punjabi would remain English untill the real translation from our server is
imported. I'll publish the instructions as soon as I package the current
translations).
- Then you are all set to follow the Drupal handbooks for other kinds of
site set up.
- Act smartly, try everything that you feel like. You can maintain test
installations to test features and modules before you decide to move them
into the real installation.
I hope I sound good with my advices.
If there's more where I could help you out, please let me know!
