ia64 is used elsewhere to refer to Itanium not intel. Indeed even Gentoo seems to use this nomeclature: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng/catalyst/ ia64 Intel's Itanium 64-bit platform (Itanium Classic and Itanium 2) I assume you mean determining EM64T and AMD64.
