That's because PSON monkey patches Object to have a to_pson method. It results in calls to to_s.to_pson, which is why we get a string with escaped quotes. Note the to_pson methods will be going away in 4.0, see PUP-3540. This functionality was never implemented, and never will be. We need to remove this code.
