Eric Sorenson commented on HI-374   Re: configure hiera to work out of the box I think if "work out of the box" means "make the default settings invisible because there's no config file", that is actually a worse user experience because there's no discoverability; it errs on the side of implicit magic. The default config ought to be more realistic and in line with best-practices, which (based on other discussion) looks like it should be: --- :backends: - yaml :hierarchy: - "certname/%{clientcert}" - common :yaml: :datadir: "/etc/puppetlabs/code/environments/%{environment}/hieradata" I don't understand the confusion around the hiera.yaml.example vs putting it in place, AFAIK the packaging already marks it as a config file / noreplace so existing ones will not be overridden. This should be very simple and makes for a better out-of-the-box experience.
