It seems to me that running 1.8.1 is insane because way too old (released more than 5 years ago), and certainly not supported anymore by ruby devs, certainly full of now fixed leaks and bugs. No matter if you use an old distribution, we can't fix every known ruby bugs in our code. I'd say that if you want to run newer software on older systems, then you should know that there is a price to pay. The price is either update your system or see incompatibilities. I suggest to raise the minimum required ruby version to something we know is working fine (ie 1.8.2 or even better). Then it's just a matter of saying: not our fault, blame your vendor.
