+1 it looks like it _should_ work everywhere we care about and the existing code doesn't always, so... Another advantage, if contrary to expectations the does not work on MS Windows it will be a readily apparent problem with a clear solution (OS sniff & punt) instead of a subtle source of hard to replicate failure.
