No, that should be fine.  We do like backward compatibility and this
is an officially supported configuration: we provide *at least* one
major version worth of backward compatibility (newer master, older
client), and we don't have *any* platform uniformity requirement.

So, if this was the cause of the problem we would absolutely treat
that as a bug.  (Fairly high priority, too, because we think that this
is a major part of the migration story for upgrading puppet. :)
