The command you are running is for puppet 2.x The error you are getting is a typical reaction of puppet 0.x Check it with dpkg -l | grep puppet Then proceed to update puppet by editing the /etc/apt/sources.list, uncommenting the maverick-backports then apt-get update, apt-get -t maverick-backports install puppet puppetmaster Your puppet should be updated to 2.6.x You may not want to use ubuntu 10.10 in a server : it is not updated/ supported anymore. Actually, I would strongly advise against using anything but the LTS releases for servers : 10.04 LTS / lucid right now 12.04 LTS as soon as it is released, in April 2012.
