1. HUMAN TRIAL FOR SPINAL INJURY TREATMENT LAUNCHED BY PURDUE, IU

The first human clinical trial of a new treatment for spinal cord injuries
was announced today (11/20) by the Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine and
the Indiana University School of Medicine. The two institutions also
reported that an Indianapolis donor has made a major commitment to support
their joint paralysis research effort. In a news conference at the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway Trackside Media Center, the universities
announced that the FDA-approved trial at IU is based on treatments developed
at Purdue. Dogs suffering paralysis from natural causes regained partial
function with the treatment.

2. PURDUE AIRPORT CARRIER PETITIONS TO TERMINATE SERVICE

Great Lakes Aviation has filed a petition to terminate its air service at
Purdue University Airport, effective Feb. 15. The petition states the
reasons as increased costs associated with converting Great Lakes Aviation's
operations to comply with a different set of federal regulations and recent
increases in fuel costs.


3. MARRIOTT FOUNDATION GIVES $1 MILLION FOR 'SUPER' CLASSROOM

A state-of-the-art teaching laboratory-classroom is $1 million closer to
reality for the Purdue Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management
thanks to a gift from the J.W. and Alice S. Marriott Family Foundation. The
$1 million grant is the single largest contribution the department has
received to date, said Raphael R. Kavanaugh, professor and department head.


4. CHRISTMAS SHOPPING FACTS AND FIGURES

A Purdue expert on retail sales puts the holiday shopping season into both
Indiana and national perspectives. Richard A. Feinberg, professor of
consumer sciences and retailing, has released holiday shopping facts and
figures based on data from the Purdue Retail Institute, the National Retail
Federation, and the International Council of Shopping Centers.

5. AUTHOR SIGNS DICKENS CHRISTMAS MYSTERY AT VON'S

William J. Palmer will sign copies of his new mystery novel, ''The Dons and
Mr. Dickens: The Strange Case of the Oxford Christmas Plot,'' Saturday, Dec.
2, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Von's Book Shop on State Street in West
Lafayette. The novel is published by St. Martin's Minotaur and is the fourth
in a series of Victorian-era murder-mystery novels by Palmer, an English
professor and Charles Dickens scholar at Purdue.


6. NEW PURDUE STRING QUARTET GIVES FIRST RECITAL

The Purdue String Quartet will give its first official concert performance
at Purdue University Band's fall recital hour at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30,
in Purdue Stewart Center, Fowler Hall. The concert is free and open to the
public. Tickets are available at the door.
