2. VIRUS STUDIES REUNITE TWO FAMILIES OF MAJOR INSECT-BORNE VIRUSES

Two families of viruses, which were previously thought to be related and
later were considered unrelated, are celebrating a scientific family reunion
of sorts. In a study published in today's (Friday, 4/6) issue of the
scientific journal Cell, scientists at Purdue show that a protein structure
on the outside surface of an alphavirus is related to a protein found on the
surface of a family of viruses called flaviviruses.

3. PURDUE TO AWARD 15 HONORARY DOCTORATES

ceremonies around the state. ''We are honoring individuals who not only have
reached unparalleled heights in their professional lives, but have also been
enormously generous in their contributions to Purdue,'' said President
Martin C. Jischke.

4. HOW TO BE A GOOD BOSS IN BAD TIMES: LAYING OFF EMPLOYEES

Push comes to shove for good managers when orders drop 50 percent or the
economy slides into a recession, and downsizing becomes unavoidable, says a
Purdue professor. ''There's a difference between being a good boss and being
popular,'' says John E. Lillich, professor emeritus of organizational
leadership and supervision. ''In fact, managers who do things to be popular
are likely to find reduced efficiency, and it doesn't make them popular,
either.''

5. PURDUE HELPS COMMUNITIES MAKE WISE LAND-USE DECISIONS

Many communities will have events to celebrate Earth Day on April 22. To
maintain that dedication to our land and water resources every day, Purdue
has a program to help put some power in plans to protect the environment.
Planning with POWER ‹ which stands for Protecting Our Water and
Environmental Resources ‹ is a statewide effort that links environmental
planning with local land-use decision making.

6. TECHNOLOGY GOES THE DISTANCE IN PURDUE'S SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

Future educators from the Purdue School of Education are using Internet
videoconferencing to connect campus classrooms with school children across
the state, and potentially the country. The distance learning initiative
partners four teacher-education classes with four K-12 classrooms each
semester. The primary goal of these partnerships is to engage teacher
candidates with distance education technology in at least one of their many
field experiences.

Foreign Agricultural Services.

9. 'TOOLBOX' OFFERS WORKPLACE FIXES FOR FARMERS WITH DISABILITIES

Farming is physically demanding enough for an able-bodied person. Imagine
what it's like for a farmer with a severe disability, such as an amputation,
paralysis or a visual impairment. Those images stirred Purdue's Breaking New
Ground Resource Center to action. The result was ''The Toolbox,'' a resource
manual for farmers with disabilities.

10. COMMERCIAL VEGETABLE GROWER GUIDE AVAILABLE

Purdue has released the ''Midwest Vegetable Production Guide for Commercial

individual vegetable varieties.

11. NORTHERN INDIANA FARMERS ENCOURAGED TO THINK ABOUT ROOTWORM

Purdue experts estimate northwest counties in Indiana will have a high risk
of first-year corn rootworm damage again this year. Larry Bledsoe, pest
management research assistant, said over the past several years, Indiana
corn acreage following soybeans, known as first-year corn, has shown
increased numbers of corn rootworm beetles. Northwest counties, where the
majority of Indiana corn is grown, have been hit the hardest.

12. EARLY PLANTING HAS ITS BENEFITS, WEATHER PERMITTING

In the spring, a farmer's heart turns to planting. The ground below him may
have other ideas, however. While the calendar heralds winter's recent end,
the first days of spring are often iffy for field work. Farmers should
realize the pluses and minuses of planting corn early, said Bob Nielsen,
Purdue Cooperative Extension Service corn specialist.
