Certainly adding failure tolerance as a software capability would allow
for cheaper solutions.
It's a hard problem to get both performance and failure tolerance at the
same time. Groups are working on this, including our friends at Clemson
and others.
In the mean time (for PVFS2) heartbeat is the best option.
