Which part is unexpected? If it is the cp time, then you might want to
try the experiment listed in this email (though you can reverse them to
go from pvfs2 to local disk if you are interested in read performance):

The cp utility might be picking a poor access size for PVFS depending on
your version of coreutils.
How fast is your network and how big is dvd.iso?
