Discussion of link formatting for projects (plus the onset of final exam
grading and procrastination) makes this the right time to suggest a related
issue I have noticed:
In the distribution I am using, email notification of page changes doesn't
seem to format links quite right. For example, the following notification
generates an invalid address, at least when the message is read with Outlook
Express. The link in the email calls Internet Explorer, which signals an
invalid address. This could certainly be a problem with IE being
nonstandard, but it unfortunately is what most people here use.
Example:
>You have requested to be alerted if the page "Swiki Beta 12" on the "Swiki Beta
>12" CoWeb has changed. It was edited on 27 March 2001 at 9:27:48 am by
>dyn025-219.misu.nodak.edu..
>
>The url is 'http://165.234.215.24:8080/docs/1.'.
Note the extra "." and what looks to be a misplaced '
I made a slight hack to the swiki code on the page
alerts.page
Subject: History Page Update (<?name?>)
You have requested to be alerted if the page "<?name?>" on
"<?bookname?>" has changed. It was edited on <?date?> at <?time?> by
<?user?>.
The url is <?url?>
which gives the following output:
You have requested to be alerted if the page "History Department Issues" on
"History Department Issues" has changed. It was edited on 24 April 2001 at
4:47:51 pm by dyn031-213.misu.nodak.edu..
The url is http://165.234.215.24:8080/deptissues/1.
This seems to work with all the browsers I have tried (navigator, ie, on mac
and pc).
Would there be any sense to having the returned link enclosed in < >'s, a la
the format used in Tidbits? I do not, unfortunately, know enough about how
urls are generated in swiki/coweb to figure out how add brackets <> to the
format page.
Finally, I'll put in a plea for more robust management of email
notifications. Multiple edits to a page can generate a very large number of
repetitive notifications. I'd like to see some sort of scheduler built in.
I could see a default of hourly notiication for any email address added to a
page, but the option of -a or -d flags to allow for all or daily
notifications.

The above comments refer to
Macintosh Version:
Comanche 4.7 / Swiki Beta 12
"Once An Angel"
(or so the readme file indicates, plus the patch discussed about a month ago
to allow notifications to work)
