I'm redesigning append areas and wanted some input for what would make sense.
Here are some things that seem like good idea:

1) appends should be appended before or after the area.

Right now, append areas are only so that appends are added before the
append area. Jeff S. asked for this.
Perhaps, this can be done with a ^ in the line, such that '+^' would be
an append area that appends the stuff after the append.

2) appends should be separated by lines.

This is already somewhat supported. How about "+_" would mean that the
appends are separated by lines.

3) appends that replicate themselves.

If you want threads where everyone can append after any append, this is
useful. Currently, this is somewhat supported by '+++++++++'. Keeping
with that, I wonder if '++' should indicate that?

4) appends with timestamps.

this might be useful for understanding the discussions better. I'm
thinking '+@' for that.

5) appends without areas.

In large discussions, a huge number of append areas can take up too much
space, especially with self replicating appends. A simple button called
"append here" that links you to a place to make an append might be better.
I'm thinking '+-' for that one.

Anyway, summarizing, these are the new options I'm looking to include in
the new append areas:

^ append area stays at top and appends go down
_ appends are separated by lines
+ replicating appends
@ timestamps for appends
- appends without areas

These could be used in combination, so that '+_+@-' would be a self
replicating append without an inlined textarea that separated appends by
lines and timestamps.

What do people think? Any other necessary features?

Peace and Luck!
