I'm running PyMSNt from the avatars branch. I've noticed that the
roster subsync packets no longer include the nickname of contacts.
For most of them I can see the nickname in the vCard though.

They do this in 0.10
Some early versions of the avatars branch didn't, have you not updated
in a while?
