Hmm, to my mind it's more like: 3 is extremely annoying, 2 is very
annoying, 1 is annoying, and 0 is happy

This is the way it should be done.  That way I can turn it off, and I
don't have to get from 1 to 3 messages saying the same thing I can see
just by looking at your status.

Actually then we are effectively talking about the same thing.  "1"  
means your client just informed you itself.  2 means your client AND  
pyaim informed you via a message.  2 also could mean that your client  
and the other person's jabber client informed you.  3 means all three  
send you something.  0 means you don't even know there WAS an away  
message.
