Ok, this is going to sound crazy, but after wondering if I had faulty hardware, I first decided to test it on linux. So I install ubuntu, download the sdk, and voila - it's fine - so I go back to windows and wouldn't you know it - it's fine in windows.
I can't believe simply re-booting my PC was sufficient to get things working. Then again, while I was developing my kernel, I managed to crash the nvidia control panel a couple of times.
