Just a bit on the water thing:
"Dihydrogen monoxide" is "technically" correct, but no one really uses it.
"Hydrogen oxide", "Hydrogen hydroxide", "Oxidane", "Hydroxic acid",
"Hydroxyl acid", "Hydronium hydroxide", and "Hydrohydroxic acid" are all
more common.  However, even among chemists, the most common name for water
is "water". :-)
