I forgot to mention that the code example I gave is similar, but not exactly like the code I'm trying to use. The example actually hangs on my system, but the original code has the weird effects I mentioned. However, there is not really a huge difference between the two besides the location of the code and the number of rects/rendered fonts being put in to the update() method.
