In my experience most gfx cards (especially newer ones that support msaa or fsaa) don't support glEnable(GL_POLYGON_SMOOTH) at all, in any shape or form. I think the idea is that multisampling is the future of anti-aliasing... and it is a standard feature now. I'd recommend checking out the example Alex mentioned.
