I should have been more clear on my objective:
I have tile-based levels which are loaded in as many individual images, 
then moved around with the camera (they are being displayed using batches).
However, reassigning the local coordinates for every sprite slows the 
program significantly, so what I would like to do is put all the small 
sprite images into one larger image with the appropriate coordinates, then 
just move that around (the blit solution would probably be even slower than 
what I am currently using).
