Yes this feature would be useful! Indeed supporting FFmpeg 4.0 seems like a 
good way to move forward.

There are also some things to be changed with the image format currently 
supported in ffmpeg.py. Looking at _decode_video_packet I can see that we 
only allocate memory for 3 channels, not 4. Also there are many deprecated 
function calls and structures used there. I saw that AVPicture is 
deprecated and obviously all functions related to it like avpicture_fill.

All this is possible to change, but it's not trivial. :)
