This is Kiwi used to do, what Kiwi2 does, and what Gustavo and Lorenzo
have been working on this last week to improve upon. You can try it now
-- it works precisely as you describe in your second paragraph, and
pretty much according to how it is documented in the kiwi howto:

If you'd like to try and suggest some UI for gazpacho to make this
easier we'd be happy to evaluate it for implementation and inclusion.
