PyLucene with JCC can be built with OpenJDK [1], the GPL'ed Sun Java.
I've been able to build OpenJDK from sources on Ubuntu 6.06 and Win2k.
Building OpenJDK from sources can be tricky, especially on Windows. The
requirements are numerous and not always completely spelled out (especially on
Windows).
Still, it's a major step forward just being able to do it !
PyLucene passed all tests on the home built OpenJDK.
